The St. Lucia projects at African Impact were developed at the
end of 2007, and since then, the project's medical, community and education
projects have flourished, serving the communities surrounding the town of St.
Lucia, KwaZulu-Natal.
African Impact arranges for volunteers from around the world
to work on various projects that promote sustainable development alongside many
of the Millennium Development Goals. Volunteers are able to promote these aims
at a grassroots level, while immersing themselves in the local culture and
communities.
The following outlines our three projects, as well as the
mission and overview of African Impact as a whole.
Education has become increasingly important to both the communities
surrounding St Lucia and African Impact – St Lucia as an organisation. The St
Lucia Orphan Day Care and HIV Education project focuses on educating needy
children so they can be adequately prepared for primary school. The project
also encourages adult learning and empowerment through English classes.
Paramount for the programme is the idea that learning can be fun – no matter
what a person’s age!
An orphan day care and HIV education volunteer is
responsible for four main projects: teaching at crèche, facilitating adult
English classes, running a reading club for local students and leading HIV
education classes for primary school students. Alongside these main projects they
also participate in building, subsistence farming, orphan afterschool clubs and
much more.
There is a great need for assistance amongst at-risk
populations in the areas surrounding St Lucia, and this project aims to fill
the void that has been left by poverty, lack of social services and the HIV
epidemic.
The Vulnerable Children and Rural Family Support project
focuses on empowering individuals and families affected by these issues. The
programme seeks to assist through community upliftment projects such as
building, farming and support groups as well as through education initiatives.
Volunteers on this project are responsible for three main programmes:
crèche assistance, facilitating a support group for mothers, participating in a
youth empowerment group and engaging with the local population on our 10
Families programme. Alongside these main projects they also participate in
building, subsistence farming, orphan afterschool clubs and much more.
Our medical outreach and assistance project was created when
African Impact staff saw a need for more medical outreach in the communities
while they were operating an orphan day care and HIV education project. It was
obvious that the communities were seriously lacking in home care, clinic
support, medical assistance and empowerment and education for those infected
and affect by HIV and AIDS.
The four main projects volunteers are involved in on this
project are home-based care, our nutrition programme, HIV education and clinic
assistance. The project also includes a lot of statistics gathering as well as subsistence
farming, building, and some family assistance projects.
Mission
African Impact aims to provide assistance to the communities
in which it works while giving volunteers a rewarding experience of African
life.
